Please help! I need a new video card

Maybe it's just me, but I think now isn't really the best time to get the newest videocard. It just seems to me that these new cards don't offer as much as, say, the GF4 Ti when it was first released. Or maybe there is a lacking amount of hype? I dunno. Whatever the case, I'm waiting until something really blows my pants off.

My choice...

Postby MFalcon on Sat May 31, 2003 10:48 pm

Well I recently upgraded my system and graphics card.

First, check out this website to check the bench test marks with multiple programs on multiple cards:

http://www.tomshardware.com

Now, my choice was easy. I wasn't going to spend a shitload of cash on a Geforce Ti4600 or a Radeon 9700 PRO, (299.99). And I wanted longevity and decent performance, so the Geforce Ti4200/4400 and Radeon 9200s were out of the running. So I chose a Radeon 9500 PRO 128mb DDR. Why? Well the Geforce cards from Nvidia are notoriously bad at both full scene anti-aliasing AND anisotrophic filtering. With the prices for middle of the road cards being in a dead heat and many of the benchmarks showing the 9500 benching as high as a 4600.. I figured I would spend the 200 bones and get a decent upgrade.

I heard the new Geforce FX cards are sucking major dick on the bench tests and they are only "on par" with the 4600/9500/9700. Its kind of sad but I think Nvidia really screwed the pooch on thier newest chipset.

Shit, I don't want to spend more money! I took the 5200 back and got a 5600 today, but these comparisons at Tom's Hardware show a big difference between spending $100 more (on the Radeon 9700 Pro).

This sucks ass. When it comes to really high end graphics the 5600 is barely better than the 5200. I'm starting to hate nVidia.

heh that is funny considering ATI always releases the most buggy drivers ever and when you hear about game video card problems it is always an ATI card.

That is true, i'll be the first to vouch that ATI's drivers are shit. But I was able to get some unoffical drivers for my 7200, and any game that says it wont run a 7200 (ie Generals) with my driver works perfectly fine. Radeon is great, even if their support isnt the greatest.

If you're buying a video card now for Half Life 2, then you're stupid. It wont be out for a while, and by then the prices will have dropped. I suspect teh monnnstar wants to upgrade for another reason.

Yep, Star Wars Galaxies. Having a good card for Half Life 2 will just be a bonus side effect of getting one now.

It looks like I'm taking the 5600 back. I just can't afford a $300 card right now and I'm not going to pay $200 for a card that is not a great deal better than my current one (GeForce 3 Ti200). Maybe in a couple weeks I'll get one.

SCREW IT! I got a Radeon 9800 Pro. There's also a small chance that I somehow got $180 off, I'll found out when I contact my bank (long story).

About the support..

Postby MFalcon on Mon Jun 02, 2003 4:20 pm

I actually haven't had any problems with any of the games I have played so far with my ATI 9500 PRO.

Games played so far:
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Rise of Nations
Command & Conquer: Generals

I think ATI's support is pretty good so far, I know earlier thier drivers weren't tapping the full strength of thier cards. As for Half-Life 2, I think any card that was built for Direct X 9 will run it without much of a problem. Obviously cards using transform and lighting with vertex shaders are going to be required to really give the game some speed. But I wouldn't fret over getting the latest and greatest to run a game that will take very little advantage of the newest "features" of the best card out.

It's only been about 18 years since this thread but in case anyone ever sees this, this was the last time I bought a non- Nvidia card. Just thought it was funny since I mentioned this in a stream the other night. I hope I don't get banned by the mods!!!!
